Researchers Look at Virtual Bridge-Building for Migrants |
A novel joint research project, led by researchers from the University of Waikato, is preparing to engage in cyberspace with new and intending migrants. The project is aimed at gaining a better understanding of how migrants use personal and virtual networks to assist with identifying employment opportunities and to establish business and social contacts.
Analyses of the integration of migrants into a host society show that migrants do best in supportive environments that allow them to adapt at their own pace. However, in New Zealand, the difficulties sometimes faced by migrants seeking employment or establishing businesses can be a barrier to social integration.
Overseas research has shown that migrant communities can contribute strongly to a country's economic success. But in New Zealand there are only a limited number of examples whereby migrants helped firms to transfer technology, raise capital or break into global markets. A number of commentators have concluded that New Zealand should make greater use of the migrant community in global business development efforts.
The research project will pilot and track a three way ¡®virtual engagement¡¯ between intending migrants, new settlers and New Zealand business people. Migrants, having successfully settled in the country for the purposes of finding or creating employment for themselves, will be invited to share their experiences with others through an online community. The project is designed by social scientists experienced in both immigration and virtual community research.
The researchers expect that it will produce both tangible results for migrants (better integration and employment outcomes) and research data to document this process. Project results will inform policy makers and future programmes designed to help migrants settle successfully in New Zealand.
Both migrants and New Zealand business people are warmly invited to participate in a virtual discussion within New Zealand's Innovators Online Network community forum - ION (www.ion.net.nz). It is hoped that migrants will interact not only with each other, but also with local businesses as well as various agencies that support migrant integration. The discussion will be facilitated by a web-moderator in order to pool expertise and develop a peer-support group across New Zealand. Connecting to the migrants' own global networks will be a key feature of the online discussion.
