English for Careers and Employment Course Your level of English language ability plays an important role in finding meaningful employment in NZ. In order to be highly employable you need to have a high level of written and verbal English skills. Our ‘English for Careers & Employment’ Course can help you achieve your career goals. This course is for new and settled migrants with an intermediate level of English skills. You will learn: - how to improve your English speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and listening skills; about NZ culture and society; basic computer skills in MS Word, Outlook Express, and the Internet; how to plan and research future career options; job searching and career planning skills to achieve your employment goals; and how to communicate in the NZ workplace. The benefits of doing this course are many. Your English skills will be significantly improved. As a result, your employability will be enhanced. You will finish the course with a clear plan of how to achieve your career goals and you will have the confidence and skills to seek out your desired job. You will be able to achieve a score of 6.5 on the IELTS test and therefore have access to mainstream tertiary education. EDU-COL will also work with you for as long as necessary to meet your employment goals. Common career goals for our students include – office administration, retail, banking, accounts clerk, sales, Government jobs, Police force, and other tertiary courses. Unitec New Zealand
At Unitec’s School of English and Applied Linguistics you can take English classes at all levels, from beginners to degree level. You will be given a placement test before you start to make sure you are placed in a suitable class. Programmes are offered at our Mt Albert campus and/or our Waitakere campus in Henderson. You could choose an employment focused course to gain the special language skills you need, or take a general English course to improve your speaking and writing ability. Some courses even include direct work experience. You may be eligible to have some of your fees paid through the Training Opportunities Programme (TOP), Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) Study Grants or Unitec’s Refugee Study Grants. If you need to have your English language skills assessed, you can also sit the IELTS test at Unitec’s IELTS Test Centre.
